NASD Basketball coaching staff brings over 30 years of basketball experience in the Nazareth Area School District as players and coaches.
Joseph Arndt-Varsity Head Coach
a 1991 graduate of Nazareth Area High School, where he was an all-league football and basketball player. He graduated from Kutztown University with a B.S. in Elementary Education. Joe is starting his 27th season in coaching and 16th as the Head Coach of the Blue Eagles. Coach Arndt led the Blue Eagles to its first ever LVC Basketball title (2009-2010 season) and made the first appearance in PIAA state playoffs since 1982. Joe came to Nazareth after serving 3 years as head boys basketball coach at Pen Argyl High School, securing that school's first ever district title. He also served as an assistant coach at Bethlehem Catholic, Nazareth and Freedom High Schools. He resides in Lower Nazareth with his wife Tracey and son, Bryce.
Dave Wickman-Varsity Assistant Coach
a 1989 Nazareth Area High School graduate lettering 3 years in basketball and golf. He attended Northampton Community College and was a 2 year varsity starter on the basketball team. He also attended Moravian College. Coach Wickmann came to Nazareth 15 years go from Pen Argyl High School after serving as Varsity Assistant Coach. He is employed by Dunbar. He resides in Nazareth and has a son, Mason.
Jim Bruno-Junior Varsity Statistician/ Assistant Coach
1989 graduate of James Madison High School in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He is beginning his 12th season with the Blue Eagles. He is employed by Hughes Relocation Company. He resides in Nazareth with his wife Kim.
Jim Hutnik-Varsity Assistant Coach
joins the staff after a celebrated career as a head coach in both college ( Allentown College-DeSales University, 6 years- record 87-76) and high school (Bethlehem Catholic- 12 years and Easton Area High School- 8 years- record 379-156) ranks. Jim is a graduate of Easton Area High School where he was names All-League in Soccer, Basketball and Baseball his senior year. He later graduated from Lafayette College where he played both basketball and golf. He has been the head golf coach at Lafayette College for the past 17 years. Jim is a retired teacher. He and his wife Sally reside in Bethlehem. They have a son, Kyle 36, who assisted at Easton and was the head basketball coach at Pen Argyl High School.
Craig Topping-Varsity Assistant Coach
is a 1992 Nazareth Area High School graduate lettering three years in basketball and was a starter for the 1991-1992 Colonial League Championship team. Coach Topping attended Shippensburg University and received a B.S. in Environmental Science. Coach Topping is employed by DSM Nutritional Products. He resides in Nazareth and resides with his wife Jennifer and two daughters Sarah and Elizabeth.
Ed Reid-Junior Varsity Head Coach
is a 2002 graduate of PenArgyl High School and an All-League and All-Area athlete in soccer and basketball. Lettering three years in basketball, baseball, and soccer, Coach Reid was the eighth player in PAHS basketball history to score over 1,000 points. He went on to play basketball at Moravian College where he lettered all four years and was a three-year starter. After graduating with a degree in Sociology and a certification in Elementary Education, Coach Reid began his coaching career as the Head JV coach for his high school alma mater. He held that position at PAHS for 4 years and also spent one year at Bethlehem Catholic High School as the Head JV coach. Coach Reid is currently a 6th grade teacher at Nazareth Area Intermediate School and owner of Old Orchard Lawn & Landscape. He resides in Palmer Township with his wife Andrea and their two beagles.
Tugend-Freshmen Head Coach
is a 1995 graduate from North Pocono High School in Moscow, Pennsylvania. He was a two-year varsity player in basketball and was named to the first team all Lackawanna League team as a senior. Coach Tugend continued his basketball career at Misericordia University and was a 4 year letterman.
He was a two-time All-PAC selection and made the ECAC All-Star team as a senior. Coach Tugend led the PAC in scoring and finished 20th in the nation while leading the team to their first PAC championship game appearance in 1998-99. He graduated in 1999 with a bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education. From 2000-2003 he was the JV basketball coach at East Stroudsburg North High School. From 2003-2011, he coached both the Middle School (2003-2008) and Freshman (2008-2011) teams at Northampton Area School District. From 2011-2017, he coached within the Nazareth Community Basketball program. Coach Tugend is a self-employed accountant and lives in Tatamy with his wife Joanna, daughter Kylie, and son William.
Todd VanNortwick-Freshmen Assistant Coach
is a 1992 graduate of Easton Area High School where he played basketball. He is currently in his 22nd year as an educator. Many of those years were spent coaching basketball at both the high school and youth levels. Coach VanNortwick earned his Bachelor of Science in Education degree
from East Stroudsburg University and his Master of Education degree and Principal Certification from Wilkes University. In his spare time, he enjoys exercising, playing and watching sports, and spending time with his three children: Andrew, Colby, and Alyssa.
Ryan Kreider-8th Grade Coach
is a 1998 graduate of Bangor High School, where he played three varsity sports. He attended East Stroudsburg University and received a degree in Physical Education. Coach Kreider is a physical
education teacher at the Nazareth Area Middle School. He is beginning his 16th
year as coach of the Middle School. His favorite motto is “Never Give-up, Never
Give In”. Coach Kreider resides in Bangor with his wife, Sara and their daughters,
Ava and Nora.
Ryan Hercik-7th Grade Coach
is a 2013 graduate of Nazareth Area High School, where he played baseball and basketball. He attended Pennsylvania State University, graduating in 2017 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education and a minor in Special Education. Coach Hercik is in his 1st year coaching at Nazareth and also as a 4th grade Math & Science Teacher at Nazareth Area
Intermediate School. He spent last year teaching 4th grade and coaching his school’s 5th grade Police Athletic League basketball team in Allentown School
District. He currently resides in Lower Nazareth.
